Let's face it...one of the most enjoyable parts of any baby shower is the food. It’s a great time to get creative and match what you serve to your theme, color, or season. Or just have a little fun with the offerings. After all, this is a great celebration of a little angel about to enter the world.
The sky's the limit with these nibbles and noshes. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Since many in your crowd may be eating for two or are new moms themselves, why not serve up a healthy menu laden with fresh fruit, salads and assorted crudités? Plus, platters piled high with fruit and veggies look oh so appealing, adding wonderful color to the table with nature’s tasty rainbow. Create a make-your-own omelet station, or even a personal grilled salmon cobb salad bar: supply all the fixings so everyone can create a plate of what they love. Make it self-serve by filling individual cups with pasta salad or fresh fruit topped with yogurt for an easy-to-eat treat that’s good for you, too.
Make your party mingle-friendly with lots of finger foods. Fill mini croissants with egg salad and serve lettuce leaf wrap-ups stuffed with herbed egg salad. Put fresh or roasted veggies on skewers or toothpicks, topped with an olive and a piece of feta. You can also use individual fun containers like take-out boxes from your favorite Chinese restaurant. Add chopsticks for easy eating. Then personalize the boxes with custom labels like, “It’s a boy!” Go traditional with old-fashioned tea sandwiches modernized by using cookie cutters to cut into assorted shapes -- use bunnies, hearts... they even sell ones that look like a 9-month-pregnant woman! Have a sense of humor with some funny face crackers sure to bring a smile to your hungry guests.
Sweets are a must-have at a baby shower. It’s time to indulge in all things delicious and that includes cakes, cookies, cupcakes, mini muffins and more. Decorate them with pink and blue frosting and add cute edible decorations that fit the occasion. A hot trend is the petite pie, mini pastry treats filled with blueberries, strawberries, apples, or a delectable combination. For something different, set up a trail mix bar with easy grab and go goodies or take home snacks. Include bowls of popcorn, assorted nuts, sunflower seeds, dried fruit, chocolate-coated candies, granola, shredded coconut, mini pretzels, banana chips and more. And there’s always a pickle and ice cream bar to satisfy those pregnancy cravings!
Drinks are another way to add some inventiveness into the mix. An afternoon shower is a perfect time for mocktails, delicious non-alcoholic drinks so the mom-to-be can partake. Make fruit and yogurt smoothies, sparkling punch with fruit juice and flavored seltzer topped with cut up fruit, and virgin mojitos made with kiwi and club soda. Even clear pitchers of water get a fresh take when you drop in mint and melon balls for a refreshing, healthy taste quencher.
