Mani-pedis, anyone? Natasha Stocker, a mom of one in Santa Rosa, California, once asked a salon manicurist to come to her house and promised her plenty of clients: her friends. “The mom who was getting her toes done was officially off duty, and the rest of the moms looked after her kid,” Stocker says. “It was so much fun to get together, be pampered, and not have to schedule child care!”
Do a BYO lunch.
“Have each friend bring a dish,” suggests Rayne Devivo, a mom of two in Normal, Illinois, who loves potlucks. “Then just rotate who hosts.” The babies can chill while you chat. Hint: Bring the portable crib!
Take a hike.
No, really. Slip your baby into a carrier or sling, strap on the sneakers, and hit the trails with pals. For newborns, take the easy trail.
Be a beach bum mom.
It’s the place to be during summer, but off-season it’s similarly fab. “We spent hours, days, and weeks on the beach when my girls were young and we lived in Ocean City,” says Kelley Faust of Philadelphia, a mom with two sets of twins (!!!). “My friends and I would have book club meetings and heart-to-heart chats while the kids were chilling, playing with sand, or staring at the seagulls.”
Go state of the art.
Visit a local gallery or museum with your MFF (Mom Friend Forever). Who knows? Your baby may get more out of that abstract blue-dot-on-a-white-background painting than you do.”
