Organizations in your local communities are helping to playing a major role in spreading the word about diaper need and getting communities involved. For more than 100 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of America (www.bgca.org) has enabled young people, especially those who need Clubs most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Today, some 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs serve more than 4 million children and teens through Club membership and community outreach. Clubs can be found throughout the country and on U.S. military installations worldwide, providing young people 6-18 years old with guidance-oriented character development programs conducted by trained, professional staff. Key programs emphasize leadership development; education and career exploration; community service; technology training; financial literacy; health and life skills; the arts; sports, fitness and recreation; and family outreach.
Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM) serves more than 62,000 girls and is supported by almost 18,000 adult volunteers. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. In partnership with committed adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives – like strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.
Founded in 1901 by New Yorker and social activism pioneer, Mary Harriman, the Junior Leagues are charitable nonprofit organizations of women, developed as civic leaders, making a demonstrable impact on their communities. Today, The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. (AJLI) is comprised of more than 160,000 women in 293 Junior Leagues throughout Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States. The National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) is a non-profit 501c3 organization founded in 1975. NAHN is actively involved in issues affecting Hispanic nurses and the health of Hispanic communities on local, state, regional, and national levels. The organization is committed to work towards providing equal access to education, professional and economic opportunities for Hispanic nurses and to improving the health and nursing care for Hispanic consumers.
The National Coalition of Pastors’ Spouses (NCPS) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization committed to increasing awareness of health care issues and concerns which disproportionately impact communities of color by providing useful information aimed at prevention, education, training, awareness and life-style changes. Comprised of approximately 2,500 multi-denominational clergy spouses, these servant leaders use faith institutions as "health hubs" to provide health information at the grassroots level.
The National Latina Health Network (NLHN) is a national leader in health promotion/disease prevention capacity building. The mission of NLHN is to address critical public health concerns affecting Latinas and their families by promoting leadership, advocacy, community health partnerships and initiatives through education and outreach that will improve the health and well-being of the Hispanic/Latino community nationwide. NLHN has extensive experience working with educational institutions, local and community based non-profits and other leaders in the field of public health to promote and implement promising practices in the Hispanic/Latino community.
United Way is a worldwide network in 45 countries and territories, including nearly 1,300 local organizations in the U.S. It advances the common good, creating opportunities for a better life for all, by focusing on the three key building blocks of education, income and health. The United Way movement creates long lasting community change by addressing the underlying causes of problems that prevent progress in these areas.
